Woven Fabric

Making woven fabric requires a two-thread system: lengthwise threads, the warp, and crosswise threads, the weft.

Warp, weft and weave

Warp and weft threads are interlaced at right angles. The way they cross determines the look of the fabric – this is known as the "weave" or binding. Suitable yarns, colours or special finishing processes can further influence a fabric's appearance and performance, but the weave is the primary factor.

Where you will find it

Unlike stretchy knitted fabric, woven fabric is shape-stable and keeps its dimensions. In underwear it appears in classic woven boxer shorts, pyjamas made of woven poplin, and wherever a smooth, taut fabric look is wanted.
